Musician, designer, visual artist and co-founder of Raster-Noton. Alva Noto on the different strands of his creative work.
Carsten Nicolai, alongside Frank Bretschneider and Olaf Bender, is part of the triumvirate that operates the revered German label Raster-Noton. Known for their distinct aesthetic - apparent not only in the music, but also in the packaging design - Nicolai’s work as _(artist-name)Alva Noto_ is an extension of those ideals: the smooth, clean minimalism made possible only in a digital world, but presented with an element of surprise that only a human code can offer. Growing up behind the Iron Curtain in Chemnitz, formerly Karl-Marx-Stadt, and now living in Berlin, Nicolai has since made a formidable reputation in the public sphere not only as a musician and designer, but also as an artist, especially in his installation work. His practice has led him to notable collaborations with the likes of _(artist-name)Ryuichi Sakamoto_ and _(artist-name)Blixa Bargeld_.
