Equal parts thought and frenzy, performer and true music scholar. Maverick and true original Dan Deacon with the lowdown on his career.
_(artist-name)Dan Deacon_ is equal parts thought and frenzy, performer and true music scholar. He studied electro-acoustic and computer music composition at the State University of New York, where he also started his solo career through a string of DIY releases that swayed from fitful dance music to erie sine wave compositions. Moving to Baltimore in 2004, Dan teamed up with friends to form the experimental music and arts collective Wham City. It was in this context that the communal spirit of his music really came to the fore, giving birth to his shunning of stages and his famed performances in the middle of the audience. In a similar spirit, he later went on to develop a phone app that would allow for audience participation at the shows. Over the years, his music has developed from his early, gleefully manic electronic solo work to including more and more real instrumentation - and bigger groups of performers in his live crew. Meanwhile, his work as a contemporary classical composer has also garnered growing recognition, his piece _(album-title)Ghostbuster Cook: Origin Of The Riddler_ getting listed by New York Magazine as one of the Top 10 Classical Performances of 2011. But this is not the story of the strange bearded man done good. As his music keeps evolving, it’s growing as likely he’ll use it to storm Carnegie Hall as he is to bring it to your local squat. The man is a maverick and a true original.
