Gold Panda drops his sample-based, skittering beats and mind-bending rhythms live on stage at Movement 2012 in Detroit.
Born in London, raised in Essex, _(artist-name)Gold Panda_’s journey has been a strange one so far. After graduating, he found himself working odd jobs around town, getting fired everywhere except at a sex shop, while tinkering with music all along the way. At one point he borrowed a sampler from an uncle and tried to convince him to front 5000 pounds to produce an album - that never happened, of course. After a while he found himself most at home with an MPC and at some point, when he was already pushing thirty, Wichita approached him for a _(artist-name)Bloc Party_ remix, having found his post hip hop electronic music on MySpace. He followed that up with a couple of EPs and more remixes for the likes of _(artist-name)Telepathe_, _(artist-name)Simian Mobile Disco_, _(artist-name)Health_, and _(artist-name)The Field_, slowly refining his sound until the sample-based approach was the only obvious remainder of his hip hop past. By the time he signed to Ghostly International where he released his first full length in 2010, he had found a singular, minimalistic way to crafting tracks that took in samples from across the world.
